Project: Ancient Civilization Concept Map
Grade Level: 6

 Overview

          This project will be helpful for students to assemble and study as they explore the different civilizations of the Eastern Hemisphere throughout the year.  The concept map defines the characteristics of a civilization and asks students to input data they have compiled into the map.

Standards:

 This lesson will address the following standards:

Mathematics, Science, and Technology

     2 – Information Systems: Students are accessing, generating, processing, and transferring information using appropriate technologies.

     6 – Interconnectedness - Students are connecting the use of technology with learning in other areas (Social Studies.)

English Language Arts

     1 – Language for Information and Understanding – Students are collecting data and ideas, discovering relationships and concepts, and using the knowledge generated from written and electronically produced texts.

     3 – Language for Critical Analysis and Evaluation – Students are analyzing information and evaluating same for classification.

Social Studies

     2 – World History – Students are demonstrating their understanding of major ideas, themes, developments, eras, and turning points in world history as they complete their charts.

     3 – Geography – Students are demonstrating their knowledge of geography as them complete the geography portions of the concept map – in particular, people’s interaction with their environment.

 Objectives:

           Students will be able to: gather information form various sources, including their own notes and portfolios, in order to complete the concept map, and evaluate the information and then classify the information according to the characteristic of civilization it fits.

 Materials:

          Students will need the following:

      Computer terminal with Inspiration loaded onto same

      Portfolios, Notes from study of each civilization

      Textbook and encyclopedias for reference

  On the Computer:

           Students will be directed to open the file with the template for the civilization they will be working on that day.  There is a template for each civilization, and, by the end of the year, students will have completed the project for each one.

 After reviewing instructions, students will work independently to research, analyze, and classify information.

  Possible extensions:

      Timeline activities

     Venn Diagrams comparing and contrasting several of the civilizations

     Comparative Essay

     Wall Mural depicting the different aspects of civilizations

     Students could export outlines and create Power Point presentations
