Unit: Grammar
Grade Level: 2
Terryville Elementary School
Instructor: Susan Silverman

Overview: This activity will allow students to interpret and articulate visual images creatively, as well as practice new vocabulary. In addition, the students will be categorizing their vocabulary into 3 different groups (nouns, verbs, and adjectives).

Standards: This lesson supports NYS Learning Standards:
English Language Arts # 1 & 2
Mathematics, Science, Technology # 5
Students will listen, speak, read and write for information and understanding by using descriptive language to convey information. They will be able to describe and analyze a given picture. The students will then understand that words can be categorized based on their grammatical functions. In addition, students will apply technological knowledge and skills to further enhance their understanding.

Lesson:

 1. Gather students around the computer and tell them they will be thinking of words to describe this picture.

2. Have students raise their hands to share their words. Type each description in the clouds surrounding the picture.

3. Explain or review parts of speech with the students. Ask, "Do you see any words that describe?" "Do you see any words that are things?" and so forth.

4. Drag the words to the correct SuperGrouper category.

After modeling this lesson for the students, it can be used as an independent activity during computer center time using the selected picture or one they could choose themselves.
