Robert Lowery Named Suffolk’s Top Scholar Athlete
Comsewogue High School senior, Robert Lowery was named Suffolk County’s top scholar athlete by the National Football Foundation. In addition to his accomplishments on the football field, the senior lineman scored 1,310 on his SAT and carries a 98.4 average. MIT and Rensselaer Polytechnic are two of the several colleges he is choosing from. He said he gets plenty of ribbing from his friends for all of the studying he does, but he knows it will make him a better person. In addition to the award, Lowery also will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward his education. "My friends sometimes make fun of me for being a nerd and that I stay home and do my homework, but this award shows you that the hard work pays off in the end," Lowery said. Lowery credited his parents and his coaches during his acceptance speech for keeping him dedicated to schoolwork and football. "My mom and dad really made sure I got my work done in the classroom," he said. "Sometimes you have to sacrifice going out with your friends and going to a party to make sure you get the work done." Comsewogue coach Chuck Carron said he's never encountered a student-athlete like Lowery and credited him for inspiring the rest of team. "I've never coached a kid who was an absolute worker off the field as well as being the best player and leader we have," he said. "He's the total package who sets the example for the rest of the team. And that makes coaching enjoyable." Picking Suffolk's top scholar athlete wasn't easy. There were several qualified candidates, according to NFF Nassau/Suffolk president Leonard Genova. "The thing that really stuck out about Robert is his un-weighted average was almost a 99," Genova said. "He took a lot of advanced placement courses and he was an outstanding football player."
