Comsewogue High School’s Athletes Helping Athletes club members recently visited fifth-grade student athletes across the District to discuss the importance of staying away from drugs, alcohol and vaping. The Athletes Helping Athletes, under the guidance of Advisor Nicole Kidd, visit fifth-grade students three times a year and conduct lessons with each class in the District on different topics related to making smart decisions.
“Our District is so proud of our students in Athletes Helping Athletes for devoting their time and mentoring our young learners,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “Varsity athletes are role models in our community and the commitment they show to Athletes Helping Athletes is commendable. They demonstrate the positive behaviors needed for being successful not only in their athletic careers, but in their lives.”
Members of Athletes Helping Athletes are varsity athletes who are trained to become facilitators to engage and mentor young people in the Comsewogue community. In their most recent lesson to fifth-grade students, members discussed the dangers of using drugs and alcohol and vaping. They helped students understand how to avoid peer pressure by role playing different scenarios in which they might be offered harmful substances and how to say no in those situations.
