Students exploring medical career opportunities

The Comsewogue School District recently teamed up with Northwell Health to offer Comesewogue High School students a Medical Career Day featuring 80 Northwell Employees representing 40 different departments.

“We’re really fortunate to have partnered with Northwell Health for this incredible event that offered our students a chance to explore the many opportunities to pursue a career in health care,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “Events like this give our students the chance to think about their futures and understand the next steps toward setting and achieving their goals after graduation.”

The event began with a career fair where students could engage with scientific experiments, learn about different fields of study and speak with 80 Northwell Employees from 40 different departments. Students also had the chance to interact with the Da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic device that allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries with enhanced precision, visualization and dexterity.

This fall, Comsewogue High School Student Abigail Dilieto launched her school’s chapter of HOSA, also known as Future Health Professionals. The Medical Career Day was the perfect opportunity for the 30 members of the club to volunteer and get involved.

“It means a lot that Northwell’s here and that the people from my club could make good connections with them and see and explore careers they could get into,” Abigail said.

The day also included breakout sessions across three rooms where students heard from 21 different guest speakers about their role in the healthcare industry. Capping the event, students attended a lecture from Dr. Arif Ahmad, the director of robotic and bariatric surgery at Mather Hospital. Dr. Ahmad was among the first on Long Island to use the Da Vinci Surgical System during a bariatric procedure. He shared his insight with students and spoke to them about the different roles and opportunities available in the field of robotics surgery.
