What is SEPTA?
SEPTA stands for Special Education Parent Teacher Association. It is a PTA within a school district that brings together people interested in children with special needs.
SEPTAs were organized to support, strengthen, and promote a greater awareness of children with special needs. We promote an understanding of student's needs, while striving to discover and implement ways of best meeting them. A SEPTA is no different from any other PTA. We must follow the same guidelines, bylaws, procedures, and regulations that govern all PTAs.
Our main purpose is advocating for all children. We keep abreast of the changes in the law and the regulations and we share this information. We sponsor workshops on myriad subjects, from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to planning for students needs after high school.
Our membership consists of parents, teachers, students, administrators, friends, and Board of Education representatives. Anyone interested in improving the quality of education of children with special needs are welcome. (Adapted from Jacqueline Milton, A.D. Western SEPTAs)
Additionally, Comsewogue SEPTA hosts various fundraising activities throughout the year. Funds are utilized for sensory friendly student activities, classroom supports, lectures and scholarships for graduating students going on to colleges, business, technical or trade schools. We appreciate the generous donations from parents, our school community, and local businesses that allow for this recognition!
