At the Board of Education's monthly meeting on Monday, March 11, 2024, ten students were recognized and presented with certificates of appreciation for numerous accomplishments, ranging from athletics awards, to music performances, to class projects.
Seniors Brandon Bermingham and Emma Norton were recently named as Comsewogue's recipients of the 2023-2024 Suffolk Zone Award. The Suffolk Zone Award is presented to two athletes each school year at each high school in Suffolk County. The Suffolk Zone chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance presents one female and male from each Suffolk County High School an award based on a specific set of criteria.
Five of our high school student-athletes qualified for state championships in their respective sports for the winter season. Sophia Deja and Lexie Cole both made the championship for Indoor Track, with Sophia taking 5th place in the high jump. Mason Mangialino took 8th place in the NYSPHSAA Wrestling championship in the 124-lb. weight class and Ethan Placencia-Nazareno placed 6th in the 200-yard freestyle event in the swimming championships, also earning all-state honors. Anthony Manetta competed in the NYSPHSAA Boys Bowling Championship on the Section XI team, who came out on top in the state. Anthony also had the highest score of anyone in the state during the event, bowling a 279 game.
John F. Kennedy Middle School seventh grader Nicholas Iannaco and sixth grader Charlotte Jaklitsch were honored for participating in the SCMEA Day of Percussion Honor Ensemble. Nicholas and Charlotte were accepted as 2 of the 12 Suffolk County 6th-8th grade percussionists to perform at Sagamore Middle School in Sachem on February 2, 2024.
Luna Ventola from Dr. McMullan's class at John F. Kennedy Middle School presented to the Board about The Butterfly Project in recognition of National Holocaust Remembrance Day and also showed a video highlighting what inspired the students to be a part of this project. Butterflies were created and placed on a wall at the school with feelings and thoughts from students when they learned about the Holocaust.
