Comsewogue School District Assistant Superintendent for Staff and Student Services Joseph Coniglione was named a member of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Precinct Level Advisory Board (PLAB) for the Sixth Precinct. Suffolk County officials recently announced the launch of advisory boards for all seven precincts, each of which will have 12 community members dedicated to working with the police department and addressing local issues.
“We’re so proud that Joe will be a member of the Precinct Level Advisory Board,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “His dedication to his community, his commitment to speaking up for others and his collaboration with the police department through his work at Comsewogue make him an amazing addition to the community advisory board.”
The creation of the precinct level advisory boards is a major component of the Suffolk County Police Reform and Reinvention Task Force Report that was approved in 2021. In 2020, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone assembled a 37-member task force of police, lawmakers, religious leaders, civil rights activists and community leaders to develop a plan that ensures transparency and accountability in policing.
Members were chosen for Precinct Level Advisory Boards after an application process and represent a diverse cross-section of community members from different backgrounds and professions. Board members are expected to share concern for their communities, have strong local relationships and are intent on working collaboratively to solve local issues.
Each board will bring their findings to precinct leaders and provide them with guidance on the effectiveness of current policing programs and initiatives. Their roles also include promoting crime prevention and awareness of domestic violence intervention, drug abuse prevention and other police department programs.
