Cell Phone Policy & Guidelines

New York State has introduced new guidelines for all K-12 schools to help students stay more focused and engaged in learning. These guidelines are designed to reduce the distractions caused by smartphones and other internet-connected devices during the school day.

Our school district is updating our policy to support this effort. The goal is to help students build healthy habits and limit the negative effects that constant device use—especially social media—can have on their mental health and well-being.

Key Points from Policy 7551

Devices found in use during school hours will be sent to the main office. A parent/guardian must pick up the device. Continued misuse of devices is considered insubordination and may lead to disciplinary action. This is not meant to be a punishment, but rather a way to help students become less dependent on their devices and to support learning in a more focused, distraction-free environment. We understand this will be an adjustment, but look forward to increased student engagement and participation.

  • Device Storage
For Grades 6–12, if devices are in school, they must be kept silenced in lockers. For grades K–5, if devices are in school, they must stay silenced in backpacks.
  • Parent Contact
Phones are available in offices if students need to contact home. Parents can also call the main office to leave messages for their child.
  • During School Hours
The policy applies bell-to-bell and does not include after-school activities or sports events. Off-campus field trip usage will be allowed at the discretion of building administration.
