Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

What is Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals—especially children and adolescents—develop the necessary skills to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions effectively. It also focuses on building healthy relationships, making responsible decisions, and fostering empathy and self-awareness.

The core components of SEL typically include:

  1. Self-awareness: Recognizing and understanding one's emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.
  2. Self-management: Managing emotions, stress, and impulses in healthy ways.
  3. Social awareness: Understanding and respecting the perspectives of others, including those from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Relationship skills: Building and maintaining positive, respectful relationships with others, resolving conflicts, and communicating effectively.
  5. Responsible decision-making: Making thoughtful choices, considering the consequences of actions, and respecting others' needs.

SEL is often taught in schools as part of character education programs and is aimed at helping students navigate social situations, manage challenges, and promote positive mental health. It's also beneficial beyond school, impacting one's personal and professional life. Support is also always available at the Crisis Prevention Hotline.
