Since the turn of the 20th century, accreditation has had a major impact on American education, with Middle States Association among the pioneers in the field. Today it is a concept that few people understand and yet one from which many could benefit. At its inception, accreditation responded to the public demand for improved quality and greater accountability for schools serving society's needs. The U.S. Department of Education- describes approved accrediting organizations such as Middle States as a “reliable authority as to the quality of education.” Accreditation is an external, objective validation of school quality and student achievement that fosters continuous school improvement. The profile of a Middle States Accredited institution includes:
Adheres to the Middle States Standards for Accreditation;
Uses its mission, beliefs, and goals as the basis for daily decision-making;
Operates in the public interest and in accordance with ethical practice;
Accepts responsibility for the level of performance of its students;
Remains committed to continuous improvement in student learning and to its capacity to produce the levels of learning desired and expected by its community;
Operates in a collegial and collaborative way with all of its stakeholders;
Sustains its focus on implementing recommendations, addressing monitoring issues and correcting stipulations that may be part of its notification of accreditation and
Fulfills its maintenance requirements to the Commission.
During the 2016-2017 school year, the Comsewogue School District embarked on becoming accredited by the Middle States Association. After a self-review process, members of the Middle States Team visited Comsewogue and granted us full accreditation. Based on survey feedback and local and state data collection, we set four goals: two organizational goals and two student performance goals. In May 2024, Comsewogue School District was granted re-accreditation by Middle States through 2031, where we set five new goals for the next seven years.
The Comsewogue School District will reduce the chronic absentee rates by -13% for Grades 1-8 and -6% for Grades 9-12 between 2024 and 2031 as measured by State report rates and survey data. This percentage is based on pre-pandemic chronic absenteeism rates of approximately 10%.
The Comsewogue School District will align the Conduct of Conduct with Character Development Initiatives to reflect student input by 15% growth in survey data and -15% reduction in behavioral referrals between 2024 and 2031 as measured by survey data and reduction in behavioral reports.
The Comsewogue School District will increase student engagement by 10% between 2024 and 2031 as measured by survey data and reduction in chronic absenteeism rates.
The Comsewogue School District will increase communication regarding student progress by 10% between 2024 and 2031 as measured by survey data and the total number of items shared with parents regarding progress.
The Comsewogue School District will complete vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment by 100% between 2024 and 2031 as measured by Curriculum Storyboard Maps and survey data.
